We love to tell stories here. Whether it's a made-up story, a story from the past, or a story from a book, stories are a huge part of our family. So when I had been thinking of what to do for Creation Station this week, I thought it would be really neat for C and B to create their own storybook featuring them (and consequently me as well)!
This really wasn't all that hard to do, and it really did help to encourage a love for literacy with the littles, encourage creativity, and boost imagination.
To start, C and B sat down with me at my computer and I transcribed their story onto pages. It was quite funny to hear the story that was brewing in Mr.C's head and how he worked so hard to come up with the plot for his masterpiece.
Once the characters and the story-line were created, we needed costumes! We scrapped together what we had in our closets and made the rest out of materials laying around the house. No masks? We could make one out of felt! No cape? A towel would work just fine! Need shields? How about pot lids! The kids were super excited as we trudged outside to our setting of the "jungle" to shoot the pictures for the story. We shared lots of laughs as we tried to take the perfect pictures and at the pictures the 3-year-old was able to capture for us.
To finish the story, I sent the kids off to do some independent play and I plunked the pictures into the pages. That's it! A book (and great keepsake) completed!
What I love most about this is that we got to spend some real quality time together laughing and playing while imagination and creativity was encouraged and promoted. C and B will hopefully remember that their stories are enjoyed and loved, what they have to share matters, and that their mom loves them very much.
I encourage you to get out with your kiddos today and create a story of your own! I'd love to hear it.
